How to clean a mattress, step by step

How to clean a mattress is simpler than the internet makes it look: vacuum it, deodorise it with baking soda, spot-treat any stains, and protect it so you never have to do the deep clean again. Here's the whole routine โ€” about 20 minutes of work plus some drying time โ€” with the Canadian products that actually do the job.

Heads up: some links are affiliate links โ€” buy through them and GoToSleep.ca may earn a small commission at no cost to you. We only suggest things we'd use on our own bed. Always spot-test a cleaner on a hidden corner first, and check your mattress's care label.

What you'll need

๐Ÿงด
Enzyme cleaner

The hero product for anything biological โ€” urine, sweat, vomit. Enzymes break down the proteins that ordinary cleaners just smear around.

Baking soda

Cheap, and the single best mattress deodoriser. Pulls out moisture and smells. You probably already have a box.

A handheld vacuum

An upholstery attachment lifts dust, dead skin, and the baking soda back out. A small handheld is easiest for getting into seams.

A washable mattress protector

The step everyone skips โ€” and the one that means you never have to deep-clean a stain again. Buy one once, wash it monthly.

The 6-step routine

  1. Strip the bed and wash everything

Pull off sheets, the protector, and any toppers and wash them hot (check labels). This is also the moment to flip or rotate the mattress if yours allows it.

  2. Vacuum the entire surface

Use the upholstery attachment and go slowly over the top, sides, and seams โ€” that's where dust, dead skin, and allergens collect. This single step does most of the freshening.

  3. Deodorise with baking soda

Sprinkle a thin, even layer of baking soda over the whole top. For stronger smells, sift it through a fine strainer and leave it on for at least an hour โ€” ideally a few hours, or while you're out. It pulls out moisture and odour.

  4. Vacuum again

Vacuum all the baking soda back up. The surface should already smell noticeably fresher and feel drier.

  5. Spot-treat any stains

Now tackle specific marks โ€” and the cleaner depends entirely on the stain. Jump to our guides for urine, blood, or yellow sweat stains. Golden rule: blot, never scrub, and never soak the mattress.

  6. Let it dry fully, then protect it

Let the mattress air-dry completely before re-making the bed โ€” a fan or open window speeds this up, and putting sheets on a damp mattress invites mould. Then add a washable mattress protector so future spills never reach the mattress again.

The one that saves you forever: 90% of mattress cleaning is avoidable. A washable waterproof protector turns every future "how do I get this out of my mattress?" into "I'll just throw the protector in the wash." It's the highest-value $40 in this whole guide.

How often should you clean a mattress?

Vacuum and deodorise every 2โ€“3 months (or monthly if you have pets or allergies), spot-treat stains the moment they happen, and wash your protector and sheets every 1โ€“2 weeks. Treat spills immediately โ€” fresh stains come out far more easily than set ones.

Specific stains โ€” pick your problem

Urine (pet, kids, adults)
Fresh vs dried โ€” and why enzyme cleaner is non-negotiable.
๐Ÿฉธ
Blood
Cold water only โ€” heat sets it. The peroxide trick that works.
๐Ÿ’›
Yellow sweat stains
The peroxide + baking soda paste that lifts old yellowing.

When cleaning won't cut it

If your mattress sags in the middle, you wake up sore, it's 8โ€“10+ years old, or a stain has soaked deep into the foam (and the smell keeps coming back), no amount of baking soda will fix it โ€” it's time for a new one. See our guide to the best mattresses in Canada for picks at every budget.
