How to clean a mattress topper depends on what it's made of โ and if yours is memory foam or latex (most are), the most important thing to know is what not to do: never put it in the washing machine. Here's the safe method that actually freshens a foam topper, plus how to handle washable ones.
Use the upholstery attachment to lift dust, dead skin, and hair from the top, bottom, and edges.
Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over the surface, leave it an hour or more, then vacuum it off. This pulls out moisture and smells.
Mix a little mild detergent (or a 50/50 white vinegar and water solution) in a spray bottle, mist the stain lightly, and blot with a cloth. Never soak the foam โ barely-damp is the goal.
Sweat, urine, or other body stains respond to an enzyme cleaner โ same approach as the mattress stain guides.
Lay it flat somewhere airy with a fan (avoid direct hot sun, which breaks foam down). Foam holds water, so give it plenty of time โ putting a damp topper back on the bed invites mould.
Some down, microfibre, and wool toppers are machine-washable if the label says so. If yours is: use a gentle cycle, cool/warm water, mild detergent, no bleach, and dry on low with dryer balls to keep the fill even โ exactly like washing a down pillow. When in doubt, treat it like foam and spot-clean.
If your topper has flattened, yellowed beyond rescue, or is just past it, sometimes the better fix is a new mattress altogether โ see the best mattresses in Canada.
